160 x 210 Bedding : A Swiss Standard ?

160 x 210 Bedding : A Swiss Standard ?

Every country in the world has different sizes of bedding - from small sheets to extra large sheets, there are so many different sizes to choose from.

In Switzerland, bed sizes and bedding dimensions are very similar to other European countries, however the Swiss have a unique size duvet 160 x 210.  Often confused with the USA twin which is 220cm long, the Swiss size bedding 160 x 210 is the most popular size in Switzerland - so why are bedding sets 160 x 210 so popular ?

  1. European Bed Size Standards: In Switzerland, like many European countries, beds are typically smaller in width compared to American beds.   In Switzerland the bed size 140 x 200cm is extremely popular - especially in city apartments where space is optimum. A bed size of 160 cm wide is often referred to as a "queen size" bed in European terms.   A 160 x 210 bedding set fits these mattresses.

  1. Single Duvet Culture: Many Swiss and German households use separate duvets for each person, rather than one large shared duvet.  It is very common for a bedroom to have two duvets measuring 160 x 210 cm on one bed - a lot of people prefer to have their own duvet rather than share one hence the popularity of this size - its great to cuddle up in your own duvet and not have the constant tug of war at night !

  1. Why 210cm long ?  The length of 210 cm is slightly longer than the typical 200 cm. This extra length accommodates taller individuals, which is a common consideration in European beds, where extra-long sheets and duvets are often available to enhance comfort and a nice night sleep.  Nothing worse than having cold feet at night and a duvet - hence the popularity of the 160 x 210 bedding sets.

So what is this bedding culture and where did it come from ?  The bedding culture of having two separate duvets on a shared bed—often referred to as the "Scandinavian sleep system"—originates primarily from northern European countries like Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and parts of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

One factor certainly that droves this was the cold climate influence of colder northern European regions where keeping warm during the night was historically a priority.

Using separate duvets ensured that each sleeper could control their own warmth without disturbing the other and allowing for better insulation during long winters, keeping cool in summer when the person next to you in bed

So in Switzerland and  Germany, and much of Scandinavia, the individual sleeping system became part of the normal sleeping arrangement. Seen as a practical and comfortable solution for couples sharing a bed, especially when people have different sleeping preferences or habits.

Interestingly the individual sleeping system has spread to other parts of the world as people see the benefits of personalised sleep comfort - also replicated in many hotels as well - two duvets not one per bed.

So enjoy your 160 x 210 bedding - a Swiss solution to a good nights sleep !
