Natural Latex Mattresses - The Benefits

Natural Latex Mattresses - The Benefits-ZigZagZurich

The quality of our sleep is directly proportional to the type of mattress we sleep on. Sleeping on a good mattress can help prevent back pain, provide a good night's sleep, and promote overall health. The Natural latex mattress is known for its ability to provide support, pressure relief, and comfort to sleepers. In this article, we will discuss the construction and materials used in natural latex mattresses and even natural latex toppers, how they provide support to the body, pressure relief benefits, comparisons to other types of mattresses, the health benefits of sleeping on a natural latex mattress, and even delve a little into history of the natural latex mattress.

Defining Better Sleep

Better sleep can be defined as a state of restful and restorative sleep that allows a person to wake up feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle the day. It involves a sufficient amount of uninterrupted sleep, typically between 7-9 hours for adults, and includes both deep sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep cycles. Better sleep can also be characterized by the absence of sleep disturbances or disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, or restless leg syndrome. Ultimately, better sleep is subjective, and can vary from person to person, but it is generally understood to be a state of restful, restorative, and uninterrupted sleep that promotes physical and mental well-being.

Several factors can influence better sleep, including:

  • Your sleep environment: A comfortable and quiet sleep environment with proper lighting, temperature, and ventilation can promote better sleep.
  • Your sleep schedule: A regular sleep schedule, with consistent sleep and wake times, can help regulate the body's circadian rhythm, and promote better sleep.
  • Overall Diet and exercise: A healthy diet and regular exercise can help promote better sleep by improving overall physical health and reducing stress.
  • Levels of stress and anxiety: High levels of stress and anxiety can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep, so managing stress through relaxation techniques or therapy can promote better sleep.
  • Sleeping disorders: Certain sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea or insomnia, can disrupt sleep, and require medical intervention to improve sleep.
  • Sleeping surfaces : The type of mattress and pillow used can impact sleep quality, with proper support and pressure relief promoting better sleep.
  • Blue Light Interference: Blue light from electronic devices can disrupt sleep, so limiting technology use before bedtime can promote better sleep.

By addressing these factors, individuals can improve their chances of achieving better sleep, and enjoying its associated health benefits.

Natural Latex Mattress- How its Made and Its Composition

Natural latex mattresses have become increasingly popular in recent years, due to their unique construction and materials. Unlike traditional innerspring mattresses, which rely on metal coils for support, natural latex mattresses are constructed using a natural or synthetic rubber material. This material offers several advantages over other types of mattresses, including superior support, pressure relief, and durability.

The two main types of natural latex used in mattress construction are natural and synthetic latex. Natural latex is derived from the sap of the rubber tree, and is considered the more eco-friendly option. Synthetic latex, on the other hand, is made from petroleum-based products, and is less environmentally-friendly. Synthetic natural latex is cheaper than natural latex but is not as durable and long lasting as natural latex.

The liquid latex is mixed with various safe and harmless additives and with natural soaps. This mixture is whipped with air to produce a liquid foam. The next step is addition of a gelling agent to gradually solidify the foam in a mould. The mould is then heated (vulcanisation) to fix the structure of the foam. Finally the “baked” foam is stripped from the mould, thoroughly washed and dried to become the final latex foam rubber product.

The Natural latex is then cut into sheets of various thicknesses and sizes, depending on the desired mattress size and configuration. These sheets of natural latexfoam are then layered on top of one another, with each layer having a different level of firmness. This layering process allows for a customized level of support and comfort to be achieved.

The euroLATEX ECO-Standard for latex foam cores has been developed by the European Latex Foam Manufacturers association in close co-operation with one of Europe’s leading and most reputable scientific institutes, i.e. TFI (Deutsches Teppich-Forschungs Institut in Aachen, Germany). The ECO-Standard defines the maximum acceptable limits of substances considered harmful to health that could occur in latex foam cores. This is based upon scientific data and stringent limits from other standards. The substances that are tested for include:

Heavy metals
• Nitrosamines
• Pesticides
• Solvents
• Volatile organic components

The value of the euroLATEX ECO-Standard has been recognised by the European Commission in so far that it has been copied into the Commission Decision 2002/740/EC “establishing revised ecological criteria for the award of the Community eco-label to bed mattresses”. EuroLATEX believes this standard represents a major advance in ensuring healthier sleeping wherever latex foam is used.

Our Natural latex mattresses are made up two layers of natural latex foam with varying firmness levels- a 5cm softer top layer and a 20cm main latex mattress core - in total 25cm.

How Natural Latex Mattresses Provide Support for the Body

Natural latex mattresses provide support to the body by conforming to the sleeper's body shape. The natural latexfoam has a natural elasticity that allows it to adjust to the contours of the body, providing support where it is needed. The varying firmness levels of the different layers of natural latexfoam can also provide targeted support for specific areas of the body, such as the hips and shoulders, which tend to sink deeper into the mattress. This support is crucial for maintaining spinal alignment and preventing back pain.

One study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that natural latex mattresses were effective in reducing back pain, and providing better sleep quality compared to other types of mattresses. The study also found that natural latex mattresses provided better support for the lumbar spine, which is important for maintaining proper spinal alignment.

Pressure Relief Benefits of Natural latex Mattresses

Natural latex mattresses are known for their pressure relief benefits. The conforming nature of the natural latexfoam can help reduce pressure points on the body, which can be especially beneficial for side sleepers. When a sleeper lies on their side, the hips and shoulders can experience increased pressure, leading to discomfort and pain. A natural latexmattress can help distribute the weight evenly, reducing pressure points, and promoting better sleep.

One study published in the Journal of Applied Ergonomics found that natural latex mattresses provided better pressure relief than other types of mattresses, including memory foam and innerspring mattresses. The study also found that natural latex mattresses provided better support for the body and reduced tossing and turning during sleep.

Comparison of Natural latex Mattresses to Other Types of Mattresses

Natural latex mattresses are often compared to other types of mattresses, including memory foam and innerspring mattresses. Memory foam mattresses provide a similar level of support and pressure relief as natural latex mattresses, but may not be as durable or responsive. Innerspring mattresses are known for their bounciness, and can provide good support, but may not conform to the body as well as a natural latexmattress.

Natural latex mattresses are also a good option for those who are sensitive to allergens. Natural latexfoam is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and other allergens, making it a good choice for those with allergies or asthma.

When it comes to choosing a mattress, there are several options available on the market. Here are some other types of mattresses, and the support they provide:

Memory Foam Mattresses:

Memory foam mattresses are known for their ability to contour to the shape of the body, providing excellent support and pressure relief. They are a good option for those who prefer a soft and cushioned sleeping surface. However, memory foam may not be as durable as other types of mattresses, and may retain heat, causing discomfort for some sleepers.

Innerspring Mattresses:

Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional type of mattress, and are made up of coils or springs that provide support. They are known for their bounciness and can provide good support for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface. However, innerspring mattresses may not conform to the body as well as other types of mattresses, leading to pressure points and discomfort.

Hybrid Mattresses:

Hybrid mattresses combine the support of innerspring mattresses with the cushioning of memory foam or latex. They typically have a layer of coils or springs as well as a layer of foam or natural latexon top. Hybrid mattresses are a good option for those who want the benefits of both types of mattresses.

The Health Benefits of Sleeping on a Natural Latex Mattress

In addition to providing support and pressure relief, sleeping on a natural latexmattress can provide several health benefits. One study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that sleeping on a natural latexmattress led to increased sleep quality, and reduced pain and discomfort. The study also found that sleeping on a natural latexmattress led to increased alertness, and decreased fatigue during the day.

    Improved Sleep Quality:

One study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that sleeping on a natural latexmattress led to increased sleep quality. This is because natural latexfoam is highly responsive, and can contour to the shape of the body, providing even support and pressure relief. This can help reduce discomfort and improve sleep efficiency, leading to better overall sleep quality.

    Reduced Pain and Discomfort:

The same study also found that sleeping on a natural latexmattress led to reduced pain and discomfort. This is because natural latexfoam can alleviate pressure points by distributing body weight evenly across the surface of the mattress. This can help relieve pain in areas such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back.

    Increased Alertness and Decreased Fatigue:

In addition to improving sleep quality and reducing pain and discomfort, sleeping on a natural latex mattress can also lead to increased alertness and decreased fatigue during the day. This is because the body is able to rest and recover more effectively during the night when sleeping on a supportive and comfortable mattress.

    Hypoallergenic and Resistant to Allergens:

Natural latex mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and other allergens. This is because natural latexfoam is inherently resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria, making it an ideal choice for those with allergies or asthma. This can help improve respiratory health, and reduce allergy symptoms.

    Breathable and Temperature-Regulating:

Natural latex mattresses are naturally breathable, allowing air to circulate freely through the foam. This airflow helps regulate body temperature, keeping the sleeper cool and comfortable throughout the night. This can be especially beneficial for those who tend to overheat at night, or experience night sweats.

    Reduced Mattress Motion Transfer:

Another benefit of sleeping on a natural latex mattress is that it can reduce motion transfer. This means that movement on one side of the mattress is not felt on the other side, which can be beneficial for couples who share a bed. This can help improve sleep quality and reduce disruptions from partner movements during the night.
