Artist Carpet Collection 2021

Artist Carpet Collection 2021-ZigZagZurich

ZigZagZurich is pleased to announce the launch of the new Artist Carpet Collection 2021.

ARTIST RUGS AND CARPETS

Inspired by our love for wool and the ancient technique to weave carpets, we are pleased to announce our new Artist Carpet Collection. This new production technique we developed combines a natural, unbleached, simply washed sheep’s wool (dark or light tone) combined with a bamboo silk yarn in the weft. The combination of these two yarns creates a beautiful contrast that is both luxurious yet hardwearing. The carpets are woven with 820’000 points per square meter leaving the pile height to a minimum to give a flat and modern appearance. The carpets are manufactured in small production runs in Europe and are Oeko-Tex certified. Backed with a non-slip finish.

Standard size is 160 x 230cm. Custom sizes available on request.

Carpets or rugs are used for a variety of purposes, including insulating a person’s feet from a cold tile or floor, making a room more comfortable as a place to sit on the floor (e.g. when playing with children), reducing sound from walking and adding decoration or colour to a room. They can also be hung on the walls as pieces of artwork.

The first launch includes three works: “Field”, “Bengali”, and “Gunta”.

Field” carpet by Jo Hummel, was created using large sheets of painted paper, which the artist cut into shapes, flipped, and rearranged until a visual balance was reached. There are visual structures such as the grid, positive negative space and the suggestion of pattern which are underpinned by a physical, human, intuitive collage process. With this weaving techniques we were able to reproduce even the smallest detail.

The “Bengali” carpet by Michele Rondelli & Sophie Probst is a humorous homage to the many tiger carpets of old times.

Artist’s biography

Jo Hummel studied at the Royal College of Art London. Her works are represented by galleries in London, Malmo and New York. She has exhibited extensively, with artworks included in both public and private collections and she has a growing international collector base. Hummel's work is characterized by a painted and paper collaged surface on which she employs spontaneous variations of space, colour and form. Although her painting collages are physically engaged and materially driven the context is purposefully anthropological and Hummel’s works are informed by human habits and behavior, with a particular interest in determinism and freewill just as much as formal concerns. The nature of collage is that throughout its creation a work is in constant flux. The artist must negotiate the canvas by rearranging, choosing and adjusting, often over long periods and having explored hundreds, even thousands of the infinite possible outcomes. In this way the creative process itself is as significant as the final outcome.

Sophie Probst
Is a German textile designer that lives and works in Zurich. Since 2015 she completed her diploma at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Art. Her greatest love was in the production of modern textiles in the classic crafts of weaving and knitting. During her studies whilst in Barcelona she deepened her interest in graphic and multi-colored patterns, drawing incredible pieces of artwork and transforming them onto raw fabrics. Her designs are a celebration of colour and freedom, with intricate detail that covers broad spectrums of interest. Her travels in Asia and Europe have inspired her work to mix cultures.
