Meet 6876: Progressive Design from London

Headed up by Kenneth Mackenzie the Scottish designer creates products in his own style – ones that blend his wide range of influences with modernist design principles. The name 6876 comes from Kenneth's fascination for the Paris student riots of May 1968. 68 - The ideals, the free thinking and anti-authoritive spirit something carried over into his work. The 76 is from the year 1976, the birth of Punk. Basically, the brand is an ethos & mentality that exists for itself and like-minded people.
The Collaboration Story
The towel design originates from one of 6876’s most requested items—a bold towel first introduced in 2002. After extensive searching, 6876 discovered an ideal partner in ZigZagZurich, a pioneering Swiss textile studio renowned for their innovative collaborations, artistic sensibilities, and commitment to high-quality, ethically-produced textiles. Both brands align seamlessly in their dedication to craftsmanship, artistic integrity, and sustainability, creating a collaboration that speaks to their shared ethos.
Inspiration Behind the Design
The artwork draws directly from an original 1970 SDS poster archived at the 6876 headquarters in London. The SDS was a political student organization deeply involved in progressive activism against the Vietnam War, nuclear proliferation, and lingering fascist influences within West German politics. Advocating democratic reforms, gender equality, sexual freedom, and openness, their protests mirrored global movements of the era. Translating this potent historical narrative into textile form, the towel encapsulates a vivid reminder of activism’s lasting impact and relevance.
